Drake has Future removed from his tour. |
Mary J. Blige got $145,000 deposit for a show she didn’t do
and is going to keep the money, Future wants $1.5 million for a tour he’s no longer a part of, and Kim & Kanye can sue the paparazzi for pictures.
To be
successful in the entertainment industry you’d better have a good understanding
of the laws that govern this world. Constantly we hear of artists, actors,
managers, and promotion companies suing and being sued for many different
reasons. I’ve been enlightened by a few cases this year as to the rights of
public figures, the price of breaching a contract, and time is money. Mary J. Blige |
A lawsuit filed by Vision Entertainment Worldwide (VEW)
against Mary J. Blige for no showing a December 2012 show in Dallas. The star
had a clause in her contract that explained Mary and her crew will fly firsts
class. The company booked them for coach and Mary Pulled the plug. The
promotions company is filing suit because they gave Mary a $145,000 deposit to
secure her for this date with a promise to pay $105,000 on the day of the show.
Mary J. has filed a counterclaim claiming VEW breached the contract 1st and
that she not only keeping the money they sent but she wants the rest of the
contract
honored because her time is money.
I find it interesting that she would feel entitled to the rest
of the money, but when you think about it, Mary could have booked another show
on that date. Source from VEW believe Mary was making space in her calendar for
a show with the Rolling Stones.
Future is suing drake for 1.5 Million after being removed from
Drake’s “Would You Like A Tour” Tour. After visiting with Billboard in NYC an
associate editor Erika Ramirez tweeted that Future stated, “Drake made an
album that is full of hits but it doesn’t grab you. They’re not possessive;
they don’t make you feel the way I do.” Drake took this as Future downplaying
his album and told his agent “Either Future Gets fired or you’re fired.” This
happened just days before the tour was supposed to start and Future still wants
his $40,000 for each of his 39 shows or about $1.5 Million.

Future had to clear his schedule for these shows and lost out on
other opportunities. A promise is a promise and Future is making sure that
Drake keeps his. Who knows what the artist had planned or what other
opportunities could have been booked not only during but also because of this
tour. Future’s team was making their plans around the tour and now all of it is
for nothing. Someone has to pay for his staff’s hard work…
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Sue Chad Hurley, a co- founder of
YouTube, and his company Avos Systems Inc., for unspecified damages. Allegedly,
Chad was an uninvited guest to a private event at San Francisco’s AT&T Park
October 21 where Kanye West serenaded and Proposed to Kim Kardashian on her 33rdBirthday. Before being allowed into the
event Chad not only verbally but also signed an agreement not to post any
photos or videos of the event. Kim and Kanye did allowed E! Entertainment
Television to record the event for the “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” TV
show.
The entertainment world works hard to be the first and the only.
Exclusivity is invaluable for content creators. The Kardashian TV Show is
potentially loosing valuable ratings due to the story being old news by the
time it airs. Where as this could have been a huge event for the show with the
world wondering how did Kanye go all out for his bride to be, we already know
thanks to Chad. The problem "Exclusive rights, such as those sold by
plaintiffs to publication of video of the event, are particularly
valuable," the lawsuit states. "If people violate these rights ...
they are of substantially diminished value."

As a professional in the entertainment industry, knowing what
you’re entitled to keeps you from accepting unnecessary losses. These lawsuits
were enlightening as a young professional because these aren’t common knowledge
things. In our every day lives we have become accustomed to certain situation
being losses we have to accept. Understanding the separation of everyday life
and the business world is crucial in the path of becoming a force in the
entertainment industry. Knowing the laws, statues, regulations, and even the
remedies will give you the knowledge to handle yourself. We have to stay
abreast to lawsuits in the industry, knowing a situation doesn’t seem right is
far different from knowing a situation isn’t right. The entertainment industry
is governed by contracts, knowledge of the rules, regulations, and laws that
govern them gives you the power to negotiate and enforce them better.
