Keep Your Eyes On The Prize

A brands success is tethered to how much influence it has over a market. In music an artists isn’t wealthy just for how many people are listening, it’s also how many people are watching. When certain artists make an appearance on a television or radio show or a movie, the price for there appearance is determined by the amount of “eyes” they bring with them.

In television the success of a show is obviously determined by how many people watch it. A successful show launches the careers of everyone involved. Sarah Jessica Parker, who had multiple movie roles before “Sex and the City”, saw a better movie role with the shows success with “Did You Hear About The Morgans?”. The year after this movie Ms. Parker was tied with Angelina Jolie for highest paid actress in Hollywood.

When speaking of TV launching careers you have to mention Johnny Carson and Tonight Show. But clearly the TV show that launched the most careers is Saturday Night Live. Although the majority of the actors had no longevity, the opportunity was there. The power of SNL lies in its network inside the industry maybe not the highest rated show but a great platform for the actors to get connected. This is a rarity in TV since “its all about the ratings”.

According to The Nielsen Company the NFL reigns supreme whenever it airs year after year. Super Bowls hold 4 of the top 10 most watched broadcasts of all time spots. This all add up to a 30 second commercial costing about $4 Million, on average, during the Super Bowl. But this is a still a steal. Not only does a Super Bowl commercials have millions of viewers; it has also become a national past time in itself. Some people watch Super Bowls just for the commercials.

Quickly jumping back to music, When an artist has millions of people in a particular market watching their ever move other brands looking for the same audience endorse the artists with their products and some cash. Lets take Beyoncé for example; I would guess in a world of over 7 billion people, she is worth about 1-2 billion sets of eyes. Pepsi found that to be worth $50 million. Perez Hilton is a blogger who’s website attracts about 8 million pairs of eyes a day. He is now worth about $30 Million and has paved the way for new comers like Nicole Bitchie.

All business is truly rated by the amount of eyes on their prize. When thinking of your next great idea be sure to remember what the ultimate goal is and that’s to get people to pay attention to you. A lot of new comers are going for the quick dollar now when the exposure from a few freebies could generate the funds your begging for in the first place. Not matter your business understand the value of the eyes as well as the dollar to make the best decisions towards attaining wealth in your selected career field.
